Her doctoral research centered on the site of Godin Tepe, Iran. She recently coauthored the final publication of that site (<em>On the High Road: The History of Godin Tepe, Iran<\/em> [Costa Mesa, Calif. 2011]). Since 2008, Gopnik has shifted her archaeological focus from Iran northward to Azerbaijan, where she is the associate director of the Iron Age site of O\u011flanqala.
